What's the difference between IELTS Academic Writing and IELTS General Training Writing?

There are two tests available: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. The test you choose should be based on what it is you want to do. The Academic test is usually for entry into university. The Writing section is 60 minutes for both the IELTS Academic and General Training.
Each includes two tasks: Task 1 is a minimum 150 words. Then, Task 2 is a minimum 250 words.For IELTS Academic, Task 1 is writing about a table, graph, chart or diagram. Task 2 is an essay.For General Training, Task 1 is writing a letter, and Task 2 is an essay.

How much is the IELTS test fee?

The cost for an IELTS test in Australia is AUD$410.00. The price for the test is the same whether you take IELTS General Training or IELTS Academic. It's also the same whether you do IELTS on a computer or paper. There is no separate registration fee, payment processing fee, or late payment fee.

I am a native English speaker, do I still need to take an IELTS test?

Whether you need an IELTS test or not depends on your reason to sit the test. If you are enrolling for higher studies/courses/training, the University/school/workplace might ask for an IELTS test score. As part of the migration process, you might have to provide the IELTS scores with your visa application.
We strongly recommend that even if you are a native English speaker, you prepare for the IELTS test and become familiar with the test format. Knowing what to expect on test day is essential, and if you are not familiar with the test you may make avoidable mistakes. How is my IELTS test different if I take it for UK visa purposes?

Separate sessions will be held for UKVI applicants. You must ensure you register for an “IELTS for UKVI” test date at IDP IELTS Sydney or IDP IELTS Melbourne
The IELTS test for UK visa purposes is designed to meet certain administrative requirements that are specific to UK Visas and Immigration. Test Report Forms will be slightly different, to show that test takers have taken the test at an IELTS UK visa session.

There are no differences in the test format or questions. The actual test taken is the same – same content, examiners, format, level of difficulty, scoring and so on.

IELTS for UKVI is delivered on computer and is now available at IDP IELTS Sydney or IDP IELTS Melbourne in Australia. Test takers who choose the new option will take their Listening, Reading and Writing components using a computer. The Speaking test will remain face to face.

Can I use my IELTS Academic results for migration purposes?

IELTS Academic and General Training are two wholly separate types of test, for two different purposes. While some individual organisations may accept an Academic result in the place of General Training, this decision is up to them. You will need to contact your specific organisation to learn more.
